About Alison Columbine

Columbine Yoga was set up by Alison Columbine in April 2009. Alison has practised yoga for 20 years and during this time has enjoyed different teachers and styles; including Iyengar, Satyananda, Dynamic and British Wheel of Yoga. She has also attended classes for Tai Chi, meditation and the Alexander Technique. Alison was a registered general nurse for 10 years and is aware of some of the mental and physical challenges people face in life. All these experiences have influenced the development of Alison’s own style of yoga.

“I like to focus on correct alignment and posture, body-awareness, good breathing technique and relaxation. I use simple yoga postures, accessible to most people, to develop flexibility, strength and balance as well as focus and concentration.”

Alison is a member of the British Wheel of Yoga (BWY). BWY is recognised by the Central Council for Physical Recreation (CCPR) and Sport England as the national Governing Body for Yoga. After completing the BWY Foundation Course in 2007, Alison is currently studying for the BWY diploma.

About Yoga

Yoga is commonly defined as the union of the mind, body and spirit. Whilst other exercise classes focus on the body, yoga also exercises the mind, which helps to both relax the mind and improve concentration. Yoga texts list many benefits of yoga, the most obvious being improved flexibility. However, there is much more to it than that and we urge you to give it a try. From a personal perspective, Alison believes that:

“Yoga builds an inner strength. It gives you space to focus on yourself. The exercises help you to have more control of your body and your mind, which helps you to cope with everyday stresses and put things in perspective. The improved posture and body-shape are a welcome bonus!”
